How play work?

Therapeutic play, (including play therapy) , is a well established discipline based upon a number of psychological theories. Recent research by PTUK, an organisation affiliated to PTI, suggests that 71% of the children referred to play therapy will show a positive change.

A safe, confidential and caring environment is created which allows the child to play with as few limits as possible but as many as necessary (for physical and emotional safety). This allows healing to occur on many levels following our natural inner trend towards health. Play and creativity operate on impulses from outside our awareness - the unconscious. No medication is used.

The therapist may reflect back to the child observations of what has happened during the session if this is felt to be appropriate. Above all the child is given “Special Time”. So often in modern life we never seem to have enough time to spend with our children - just playing, just being there for them. The child is given strategies to cope with difficulties they face in life and which they themselves cannot change. It provides a more positive view of their future life.

Sessions may last from typically 30 to 45 minutes. They may be with individual or groups of children. A variety of techniques - 'the Play Therapy Toolkit' are used according to the child’s wishes and the skills of the ‘therapist’. These may include: clay, art (drawing), music, movement, sand, etc...

The first recorded use of therapeutic play goes back to 1919 It is informed by a number of psychological theories. Probably the most important contributions to modern practice are the work of Virginia Axline and Violet Oaklander. Two major approaches are 'Non-directive play therapy' and 'Directive play therapy'. A skilled practitioner will adopt a mix of both approaches according to circumstances.

Play Therapy International has, through the work carried out by Play Therapy UK (PTUK), pioneered the development and use of a competency framework, as the foundation of a Profession Structure Model, to improve the understanding of exactly what a practitioner of therapeutic play does. A list of competencies for a Play Therapist provides further information.

Note By Phaik Nie

Jin : my world

Jin is 17 years old, male, chinese
father and mother as hawker stall sell curry mee

the little boy sit on the stone, and there is green tree behind him.

using the fence to block himself, and it's look like the picture separate to 2 side

there is wild animal at the right angle
there is 4 wild animals (jungian stress on 4, as well as sand play) after the 3 farm animal

the wild animal have the power or ability to attack
and the farm animal is not having the ability compare the wild animal

the branch block the little boy from the animal world with stone and plenty dry stick

reflection
when i am having discussion and reflection with JIN

i asked him "how do you see this tray as you do"
he answer: this is a cruel world, big animal ate small animal, and no way out
the outside world is dangerous, and people betrayed, not loyalty to e
ach other, tell lies, cannot be trusted and it's the best way to block the world from mine

i asked: if you are in this tray, where will you would be? and what do you think the object is doing?
he said, he is the little boy with blue hat

he say he is watching... and enjoying himself
if this little biy with blue hat (the object) would like to walk out the world, he can do so
but if the outside world is going to go into his world, there is no way in...

i felt that
Jin, the client is having fear of the world outside which he might be dissapointed and he want to take control of his decision who can be his friends, and who is not.

so, i am not sure am i practice the right way??
alex and friends, give me some feedback...???
how i do the reflection?? is it right?

i remember, alex said to me, how if i can publish it without upload the JPEG file, but embeded from mind map to blog

today i manage to do so.

it's easy, if i wiling to learn. i felt that throughout the ALS e-learning module, this ICT is seems become easier and make me convenient to work.

what i need to do is click on publish

Check the Publish map to internet option and copy the respective URLs to the clipboard.

If you do not want your map to appear in the Public Maps dialog you can enter a password. All URLs will per default include the password so your users can still get to the map without knowing it. You also have the option to delete the passord parameter from the URL you are using - in this case your users will be prompted to enter the password when connecting to the map.

You can publish your map as a WikiMap to enable read and write access for every MindMeister user.

The following URLs are provided:

  • URL: e.g. for adding to an email message
  • Direct link: for linking from a web page or blog
  • Embed code: for directly displaying the mind map on your website, or integrating it into your blog in an inline frame

You can play around with the width, height and zoom parameters to the IFRAME request to make the map fit your desired dimensions.

1st online supervision:ALS Small World

communication is important in therapeutic work... i admit this
but, if u got a client who is from another race/ethnic,
and this work must be carry on, it's really cause problem.
in addition, if you see that the case referral is need for attention, how would you let it go? or you would find someway to help this particular case?

the client is really in low social-economy classes,
the father have no time to look after him, he only have friends in same social interaction, and he is not able to communicate wisely... this make him upsad most.

this is good example, where Alex had give me some idea on how the client's literacy skill. i will try to figure out how to do a small test by using the primary school work book. from here, maybe this could help to give some education for him and learn how to talk more.

the first thing i need to look at for this client, how can i work therapeutically to my client. i shall not forget bout what is the primary care and also create a personal space for my client to share about his personal world

in next meeting, i will try to set up an opportunity to let client (KRI) make his own small world play, and see how the client work without the father intervention

let see how it's work.
i am really expecting....

Archetype

Archetype

The origins of the archetypal hypothesis date back as far as Plato. Jung himself compared archetypes to Platonic ideas. Plato's ideas were pure mental forms, that were imprinted in the soul before it was born into the world. They were collective in the sense that they embodied the fundamental characteristics of a thing rather than its specific peculiarities.

The concept of psychological archetypes was advanced by the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, c. 1919. In Jung's psychological framework archetypes are innate, universal prototypes for ideas and may be used to interpret observations. A group of memories and interpretations associated with an archetype is a complex, e.g. a mother complex associated with the mother archetype. Jung treated the archetypes as psychological organs, analogous to physical ones in that both are morphological constructs that arose through evolution. [4]

Jung outlined five main archetypes:

  • The Self, the regulating center of the psyche and facilitator of individuation
  • The Shadow, the opposite of the ego image, often containing qualities that the ego does not identify with but possesses nonetheless
  • The Anima, the feminine image in a man's psyche; or:
  • The Animus, the masculine image in a woman's psyche
  • The Persona, how we present to the world, usually protects the Ego from negative images (acts like a mask)

‘Do’s and ‘Don’ts’ In Play

there is always do and dont in play.
include Small World Play.

Do

Tell your child that she will come for a Play Time (or to see someone if your child is older) to help her:
    • feel better (about school, about…)
    • feel less sad
    • feel less angry, etc
  • Tell your child she will come to a room with toys and sometimes they may play or they may talk.
  • Tell your child that this Play Time is not “a test” or “an exam”, etc. She is not expected to do anything but to play or talk as she wishes.
  • Explain that sometimes this person may talk to daddy or mommy before or after your play time. This person will meet parents to find out how you are and plan how to help you.
  • Tell your child that this Play time will usually last about 45 minutes and may happen every week or every other week

DON’TS

  • Tell your child that she is bad
  • Tell your child that she is the problem
  • Tell your child that she is sick
  • Tell your child that someone will observe her in play and give advices
  • Tell her to listen to the “play therapist” whatever she’s asked to do
  • Tell her to behave in sessions
  • Give your child any pressure about being good in session
  • Put pressure on your child to talk about her problems, etc
  • Tell your child how much the session costs or that it is expensive, etc. This may increase children’s worries or anxieties about their “performance” in sessions. This may also make children feel guilty or blamed.

ya, Today i m spending my time to listen to Alex "air wave"
He is having conversation on Min See and Chriz, Counsellor from UK at http://creativefrequency.blogspot.com .

they are talking about the story and, how is the character of the story, and how the story can be process, in the therapeutic process. and meaning behind the story

i think, for play itself, children/client have their own story too...
this is to be duty of a therapis or counsellor to look depth into client's inner world, understanding of the psychic world, the theme underlying unconscious mind needs

after listening to the conversation, it opend my mind and having relection on the meaning of the story for each. i need to be more alert of the story showing by the clients and looking at their archytype and thinking process which is more closer to unconcious, the ego and so as the spots area shown in the tray.
